The Importance of Poetry
The amount of value poetry contains depends completely on perspective. Poetry could mean the world to some people, but to others, (including myself), it is meaningless. It all depends on the individual. This is why I don't believe in teaching it in school; the only ones who really get anything out of studying poetry are the ones who thoroughly enjoy and appreciate it. Plus, knowing how to analyze poems won't help you get a job. Sounding smart on a résumé will, which is something English class can help you with. Speech skills learned in English class will also help you with job interviews, as well as presentations you would have to give for your job. I'm not denying that poetry is a good thing, I just don't really see the point of teaching it in school.

I agree with you on some points here. (Nice use of spoiler tags, by the way) I think that it is all subjective, like most things. There are some people that I'm sure love analyzing poetry. However, I do think that it has some value, in the sense that most of the rap that you and I listen to (just take a look at Atmosphere or Kdot) is based on poetry. Subconsciously we are listening to poetry almost constantly, and enjoying it! While I'm not a fan of the type of poetry we read in school, there is definitely poetry that I can enjoy. I do agree with the statement that poetry doesn't need to be taught in school, though, mainly because the lessons we learn from poetry can be taught through different, more interesting units.
